Fitbit Users Will Need to Move to Google Account by 2025

Google and Fitbit have announced a major change in how Fitbit users will log in to their accounts. Existing users will soon have the option to start logging in using a Google account, with a requirement to do so by 2025. New users, on the other hand, will be required to register with a Google account starting this summer.

This announcement is not surprising given that Google had already revealed last fall that it planned to require all Fitbit users to start using a Google account in the future. Fitbit users will start seeing prompts upon opening the app, and they will be able to get a head start on the migration. Alternatively, they can head over to the Settings menu to begin the process.

Google is positioning the new login requirements as being more convenient for users, citing unified privacy controls as one of the benefits. By moving away from Fitbit’s login system to its own, users will also be able to see and manage where they are logged in across their Google account. Google is promising even more updates and engaging experiences in the future.

Despite the convenience and added benefits, many users may not be fond of the change. Fitbit has built a loyal user base over the past several years, and requiring users to eventually move to a Google Account may move them further away from the Fitbit experience they’ve grown accustomed to. However, users shouldn’t expect any changes when accessing historical health and wellness stats.

It’s worth noting that Google has been integrating Fitbit’s services and products into its own portfolio since the introduction of the Pixel Watch last fall. Fitbit recently removed all adventures, challenges and open groups from its app, a change that came as a shock to users. Prior to the acquisition, Fitbit touted its social features as a significant part of its platform and community.

Google reassures users that Fitbit health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads and will continue to be kept separate from Google Ads data. The company is also keen to emphasize that users will still be able to access and control their health and wellness data as they have done in the past. Only the login experience is changing.

As Fitbit users prepare to make the switch to a Google account, the tech giant is promising even more exciting updates and experiences in the future. It remains to be seen whether Fitbit users will embrace the change, but for now, the countdown is on.
